One thing that is the same all around the world:
Having a Swissy is to have a great four legged friend that makes your life better. - Inga Britt
The vision for the GSSHWWDB (Grosse Schweizer Sennenhunde World Wide Database) began in 1998 as a collaborative effort between Swissy fanciers Jonathan Bastian (USA) and Dr. Wolfgang Reese (Germany). The goal was to compile pedigree and health data on Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs in America and throughout Europe. In 2021, the decision was made to form a 501(c)3 organization and move forward with the process of making the database available to everyone throughout the global GSMD community.
As of July 2022, our foundational data included health and pedigree information on over 47,000 GSMD which had been collected through extensive research, voluntary submissions from supporters, as well as imported data from The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and European health registries.
The GSSHWWDB seeks the support of owners, breeders and fanciers throughout the globe to help continually update information to the database and supply photo images. It is our hope that this information serves the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog community as an important tool in assessing health, studying pedigrees, and making more informed breeding decisions.
